    【Project Introduction】

    The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for mRNA technology, recognizing not just its role in combating viruses but also its promise in revolutionizing medicine.

    In 1990, scientists successfully injected in vitro-transcribed mRNA into mice and were delighted to discover that it could express functional proteins within the animals. This experiment not only paved the way for mRNA therapeutics but also revealed the novel possibility of generating immune responses by expressing specific proteins.

    However, despite its immense potential, mRNA was once considered a "fringe technology" due to its inherent fragility and did not receive widespread attention or application. Yet, history is full of surprises and turning points. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic brought mRNA vaccines from the background to the forefront. Incredibly, the development and approval of a vaccine was achieved in just one year, thanks to the rise and breakthroughs in mRNA technology. The high recognition from the 2023 Nobel Committee further propelled this technology to its peak.

    When discussing mRNA vaccines, the LNP (Lipid Nanoparticle) delivery system is undoubtedly an indispensable part. This advanced delivery system acts like a "guardian escort" for mRNA, ensuring it can function safely and effectively within the human body.

    This JSR Academy mRNA Vaccine R&D Customized Research Project will guide students into a National Key University's Key Laboratory to complete a full research process for an mRNA vaccine, including design, production, assembly, and efficacy evaluation. It aims to provide students with a more intuitive understanding of the cutting-edge application of nanomedicine at the intersection of disciplines.

    In the experiments, students will not only conduct in vitro cell experiments but also perform in vivo experiments using mice. Conducting in vivo mouse experiments requires students to master a series of practical skills, such as animal handling, drug administration, and sample collection.
