Newly Upgraded [2022 Summer] Pathogen Identification and Species Classification Research Project 爱博物
【Project Upgrade】
This edition of the project builds upon the classic IBOWU research program in DNA barcoding for species identification. In response to the ongoing developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, it now includes a virology component, covering the principles of novel coronavirus detection. Participants will not only enter the laboratory to learn gene detection and species identification techniques but will also gain insights into the principles and procedures of COVID-19 testing. Students will have the opportunity to wear Level 3 protective equipment and simulate the nucleic acid testing process at the Fire Eye Laboratory, demystifying the procedures behind COVID-19 testing.
【Project Introduction】
In late 2019, an unknown viral pneumonia began to spread silently. Initially, we knew nothing about the virus's origin, triggering factors, or transmission vectors, leaving us to seek treatments amid speculation and fear. It was akin to fighting a desperate battle against an unknown enemy.
Researchers quickly used nucleic acid sequencing to identify the culprit behind this pneumonia: a novel coronavirus—Sars-Cov-2.
▲Digitally Rendered Appearance of the Coronavirus
In the field of biology, there are countless organisms like Sars-Cov-2 that remain undiscovered or poorly understood. Yet, such a tiny unknown virus can pose a massive threat to humanity. To quickly and accurately grasp information about unknown organisms, we inevitably rely on species identification technologies, including nucleic acid sequencing.
▲Laboratory Nucleic Acid Testing Process
The IBOWU · JSR Academy mentor team has designed a life sciences practice-based "Pathogen Identification and Species Classification Research Project" in response to the current pandemic situation, virus detection, and prevention efforts. The project will delve into the most pressing issues, such as virus discovery, nucleic acid testing, vaccine development, and therapeutic drugs. Participants will also have the chance to visit the renowned Fire Eye Laboratory, wear Level 3 protective equipment, and simulate the entire nucleic acid testing process.
▲Molecular Biology Gene Extraction Experiment
This project will guide students to explore cutting-edge life sciences knowledge, reflect on the profound impact of the pandemic on society, and master more comprehensive research methodologies.
【Course Time】 July 15–20, 2022
