This year's iGEM finals introduced some changes. The nominations for various special awards were announced four days prior to the final results, and in addition to the Finalists, the TOP10 list for each division was also released. This marks the first time in iGEM history that the TOP10 list for each division has been published, underscoring its significant prestige.
As the third team from IBOWU·JSR Academy to participate in the iGEM competition, iBowu-China2021 not only secured a place in the high school division TOP10 but also received nominations for three special awards: BEST EDUCATION, BEST INTEGRATED HUMAN PRACTICES, and BEST WIKI.

1.What is iGEM?
International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) is a premier global competition in the field of synthetic biology. It was initially founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2003 and has since evolved into an international academic contest. In recent years, each edition of the competition has attracted over 6,000 participants from more than 40 countries, spanning high school, undergraduate, and graduate divisions. The number of high school teams has been increasing annually, with 83 high school teams participating in 2019 (though the number declined in 2020 due to the pandemic).
Influence
iGEM focuses on encouraging responsible technological innovation, enhancing biosafety, biosecurity, and public education. It has established a standard registry of biological parts, comprising over 20,000 standardized genetic components, which students can access through open-source technology.
iGEM often intersects with fields such as computer science and statistics, comprehensively evaluating participants' research capabilities, business acumen, and social awareness. As a result, it garners attention from top academic journals like Science, Nature, Scientific American, and The Economist, as well as traditional media outlets like the BBC, giving it broad international influence.

Many world-renowned universities are regular participants in iGEM, including MIT, Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Stanford, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University. For example, Zhejiang University receives 300-500 applications for its team selection each year, but only 15 students are ultimately chosen. Every university takes pride in winning an iGEM medal!
High school students participating in the competition have the opportunity to collaborate and exchange ideas with students and scholars from prestigious universities such as Tsinghua, Peking, Harvard, and MIT, enhancing their comprehensive skills and broadening their international perspectives. Most members of winning teams are admitted to top-tier universities, including those ranked in the top 30 in the U.S., the UK's G5, renowned Canadian institutions, or China's 985 project universities.
